Task 3

OBJECTIVE

Producing newsletters is a very powerful way of communicating with your members. The key to newsletters is brevity and readability. A good newsletter will catch the eye of a potential reader at a glance. This requires the careful use of pictures, graphics, text fonts and colour. Newsletters use text columns. These make the articles much easier to read. Normally an A4 page will be split into 2 or 3 columns. The columns can be broken up with pictures, headlines and ‘pull quotes’. Pull quotes are key phrases copied from the main text blown up to a large font to draw attention.

TASK 3

Produce a newsletter for your members about an item of general news, which you feel that your members should be aware of. Add your own spin on the article which can be as brief as a single headline explaining why you feel it is important for your members to pay attention to this news item.

The folder you have copied to your disk contains pictures and text that you can use in your task. Remember that you do not have to use everything. The key is editing the source information to ‘cut to the chase’. Alternatively you can find a story on the Internet to report on.

Always include you name and contact information at the end so people know who has produced the document.

Never write anything in a newsletter that you are not happy for anyone to read. You must always be accountable for a newsletter’s content especially if it contains a logo of a trade union, company or other organisation. Ensure that nothing you write or print could cause offence or distress to any individual or group of people.
