The Trade Union Studies Centre, Hull College successfully completed their first two programmes of study. Representatives from numerous Companies have attended and supported the project. The new Learning Representatives are now putting what they have learnt into practice.
Learner Representative comments :Stuart Hempshall AEEU convenor at C.S.Martin from Alford, N.Lincs says : "I was interested in becoming a Learning Representative after hearing about the project during a trade union meeting. I wanted to know what opportunities were available for mature learners. Many of my colleagues are interested in their own personal development and there still seems to be a phobia about I.T. I am now able to give advice on which courses would be suitable, from beginners to a more advanced level". |
Dave Gowans a shop steward from British Aerospace added " As we already have a purpose built learning facility on site, coupled with a strong staff development programme, the accelerate project was welcomed as the next step. It will help build the bridge between learning at work and on site to the next step of studying at a college or training centre, Colleagues have already shown they are happy to talk to me on an informal, friendly basis and it is my job to follow up any area of study they are interested in. I also have use of a staff notice-board and a Training Access Point computer programme to help me". |

Graham Carpenter, an AEEU union rep from Yorkshire Marine Containers in Beverley, commented, " To start with there was some scepticism from members as to what the course and the Learning Representative could do for them. The Management at work were very interested in the scheme but were concerned initially with the cost of taking part in the project, once Kelvin had explained the project in full and they realised the on-going benefits to the workforce they supported it 100%. Already the Company is reaping the benefits as employees have taken additional Health and Safety training.
Notice Boards
Official AEEU Learner Representative notice-boards have now arrived. These notice-boards will be distributed to all Learner Representatives and they will become the focal point for membership education.
Positive Feedback
All rep who have attended the Accelerate training programme have had good feedback from members, employers and training providers. Companies who have learning Centres are working closely with the Learning Representatives to ensure their facilities are fully utilised.
